A 2006 BCG study of innovation management in the European chemical industry revealed that nearly 70 percent of companies rank innovation management as a top priority. Yet about half of all companies report that they are dissatisfied with their return on innovation management. What’s going wrong? Chemical companies can generate more value from their innovation-management activities by aligning their business and innovation strategies, broadening their idea generation, improving metrics and incentives, and differentiating among levels of innovation governance.
